  Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corporation

tire_dump

In Saskatchewan, we generate over a million scrap tires every year, creating a huge environmental challenge. Imagine what a million tires would look like in a municipal landfill. Imagine the damage that would be done by continually dumping a million potentially hazardous and environmentally harmful nuisance products into our waste stream year after year. Fortunately, there is an alternative.

The Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corporation (SSTC) is a non-profit, non-government organization that delivers the province-wide tire recycling program. Since 1996, we’ve been diverting millions of used tires from the Saskatchewan waste stream and cleaning up decades worth of old tires from municipal landfills, recycling them into useful, marketable items.

Consumers make all of this possible by paying a small recycling fee when they buy new tires. Thanks to the support of Saskatchewan people, we’ve built one of the most successful tire recycling programs in Canada. Let’s keep it rolling!

Landfill Clean-Up

PHASE II NEARS COMPLETION

SSTC is delighted to announce that 2009 marks the last year of Phase II of our program – every landfill in Saskatchewan will be free of scrap tires by December 2009.  When the work wraps up, SSTC will have removed scrap tires from over 300 landfill sites around the province - the equivalent of 1.5 million passenger tires.

Phase II of our program provided a one time free tire removal from all municipalities that implemented and registered a bylaw which prohibited scrap tire disposal at their landfill.  If your municipality was not part of the no-cost clean up, time is running out.   Please contact the SSTC office at (306)721-8473 for more information or by email to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to make sure you are registered.

A full list of the registered landfill sites can be found here

The next goal is to complete landfill clean-up entirely, and to embark on Phase Three of the SSTC program, which is to identify, remove and recycle private stockpiles of tires that have not been addressed by the municipal landfill efforts.

Recycle Saskatchewan

SSTC Joins "Recycle Saskatchewan"

Saskatchewan’s environmental stewardship groups have joined together to create a one-stop shop for everyone in the province to get green information: www.recyclesaskatchewan.ca.

Partners in the initiative include the Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corporation, SARCAN, Product Care (paint recycling), the Saskatchewan Association for Resource Recovery (SARRC) and will be maintained by the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council.

Recycle Saskatchewan serves as a place for individuals, schools, communities and companies to get started, and to share tips for keeping Saskatchewan green. The website will grow and evolve, and a second phase aimed at students and teachers is in the planning stages.

Comments, ideas and recycling tips and hints are welcomed.
Visit www.recyclesaskatchewan.ca to share your tips or to give feedback on the site.
