Who Has Seen the Fence?

I had the pleasure of meeting with Mark Geiger of Mark Geiger Ventures who is responsible for the development of the Skyview Sub-division in the northwest part of Regina, Saskatchewan. The interesting thing about this is that Mark and his people are putting plans together for the construction of a fence made of 100% Household plastic.

The Fence will be bordering on Diefenbaker Drive as well as McCarthy Blvd and eventually on Armour Road. The Fence is designed for noise reduction as is commonplace around sub-divisions these days. The attached picture shows a sample of 4 sections that have already been built.

These fence boards are made from household plastic such as yogurt containers, Javex containers, shampoo bottles and any other plastic that has been collected from your kitchen, your bathroom or your laundry room. The plastic has been collected from various curbside customers in Regina and area, Moose Jaw and Prince Albert as well as from Material Recovery Facilities (MRF) around the province. This plastic is then shredded in our plastics plant where it then is heated to approximately 220 degrees celsius to liquify it in the extruding process. The liquid plastic is forced into a mould where it forms the 1" x 4" x 8' board. The mould is then cooled and the board is removed and trimmed to the correct length. The board is then ready for use as is the case in this project.

Phase One is slated for construction for the spring of 2012 with 60 acres being developed for about 500 homes. This is part of a 5 year plan which will encompass about 280 acres. The Fence will be about 8 kilometers long when completed. It will be 7 feet high with 8 foot sections consisting of 1" x 4" x 8' plastic boards stacked one on top of another.

Just think of the amount of household plastic that will be diverted from the landfill when it is complete. It will take approximately 260,000 boards to complete the fence with an approximate weight of 3.4 million pounds of plastic.
